How safely dispose of old razor blades: The importance of using a Blade Disposal Container

For the sake of the brave men and women working in recycling plants and garbage disposal facilities around the world, we’d like to start this article by addressing those of you who think throwing away old razor blades in a dustbin for recycling is ok – it’s not. Seriously. Stop it.

Even though razor blades are made from recyclable materials, they’re too thin to validate any efforts at recycling them, unless of course the razor blade companies themselves administer the process.

Regardless, if you threw away your blades without following the right procedure (which we’ll be discussing in a moment), you could put the people working in garbage disposal and recycling in harm’s way.

Stray blades could injure workers while sorting through garbage for recycling and disposal – no matter how severe the injuries would be, it’s only human of you to take the right steps to prevent such scenarios. So, how exactly do you safely dispose of your old razor blades? We’re glad you asked!

Using a blade disposal container

Using a razor blade disposal container should be the first thing to come to mind when you need to safely dispose of your razor. These containers can be made from several materials, the most favoured ones being hard plastics and metal. These containers allow you to throw out a bunch of worn razor blades with peace of mind knowing that they won’t bring harm to anyone. The best part? It’s easy to make one of your own! If you’re not for the task though, we’ve got you covered.

Once your container has reached its capacity, we recommend that you wrap it up in duct tape and take it to your local garbage disposal facility – you want to leave it out for a trash compactor because of the likelihood of the razor blades escaping their container under the crushing weight of the compactor.

The complete mini-guide to bleaching your hair using bleaching powder

Many women can’t help but to give in to their need to constantly change and improve on themselves in one way or the other. When it comes to change, many women love experimenting with their hair as a starting point for the change they seek; this experimentation often comes in the form of dyeing their hair in different colours.

For those of you who have naturally dark hair, dyeing is a tricky task if you don’t know where to start. Don’t worry though, we’ve got your back. Before dyeing your hair, you first need to bleach it using reliable bleaching powder – think of it as creating a clean canvas for the oncoming work of art.

Bleaching is a safe procedure that any woman can use, and is much easier than it may seem. Keep on reading to learn more. Otherwise, if you’d like more personalised assistance with bleaching your hair, don’t be too shy to give us a call!

Step by step guide to bleach your hair with bleaching powder

Before you try bleaching your hair by yourself, you need to know whether your hair is healthy enough or not to go at it alone. If your hair is super-fine or is experiencing any kind of frizziness, dryness or breakage, you should leave the bleaching and dyeing to a professional. If your hair is completely healthy though, and you have no doubts about its state, go ahead and follow these steps to properly bleach your hair with bleaching powder.

Prep

First thing’s first, you should treat the bleaching as a ritual of sorts; lay out everything you need neatly around you so that you won’t have to run around looking for things once you begin the process. Here’s what you’ll need”

  1. Bleaching powder of choice;
  2. An old clean t-shirt;
  3. An old clean, towel;
  4. Hair clips
  5. Shampoo

Pro-tip: Guy Tang and Shvonne Perkins, two reputable celebrity hair colourists suggest that hair should always be somewhat dry and clean, which means no dry shampoo, no styling products, and no excessive oils, although a bit of natural oil is fine. You should also bear in mind that bleach is notorious for destroying fabrics, so choose what you wear wisely. Remove any fabrics that may be in danger of coming into contact with the hair bleach and make sure you ‘re wearing clothes that you can hop into the shower with. This is where the old t-shirt comes in handy.

Process

  1. First thing’s first, you’re going to need to properly prepare your hair bleach for the process. To do this, simply follow the instructions in the guide provided in the bleaching powder’s packaging – don’t rush it!
  2. Next up, you want to split your hair into four sections so that you can neatly apply to your hair bleach. Keep in mind that you’ll also need to apply your bleach to smaller segments within each section to ensure that you’re fully saturated your hair.
  3. Apply your bleach at least 1 inch away from your scalp before working your way up the section of hair you’ve chosen. It’s important that you do not start at the scalp since the bleach processes much quicker in that area thanks to your body heat. Once you apply the bleach to your sections, go ahead and apply it to your roots.
  4. Leave the bleach to settle and process for about 20-45 minutes, depending on your hair colour, desired results and the instructions that came along with the bleaching powder.
  5. When you’ve waited long enough, shampoo your hair as thoroughly as possible before rinsing and drying with the old towel.

Upkeep

One of the most important parts of hair colouring is how you treat your hair afterwards. Whether you get your treatment at a salon or it’s a DIY job, you’ll want to take good care of your hair after you’ve bleached and coloured it. Experts recommend several types of hair supplements to keep your hair and scalp healthy – Guy Tang also recommends that you blow dry your hair to ensure that the cuticles are soaking up all the much-needed nutrients needed to keep your hair healthy and hydrated.

If you’d like some assistance with choosing the right hair products for upkeep, we’d be more than happy to help you out! Simply get in touch with us at your earliest convenience, we look forward to hearing from you!

Importance of Hygiene in Spas, Salons and Barber shops

Hygiene has always been an essential practice for spas, salons and barber shops of all sizes around the world. However, today more than ever, hygiene is something that no spa or salon owner can afford to ignore because of the global pandemic that has taken the world by storm.

Besides Covid-19, salon and spa owners are obligated by workplace regulations to maintain high standards of hygiene in their shops. In this blog, we’re going to talk about why hygiene is an essential part of any salon or spa, as well as explore a few of the things you can do to effectively and consistently practice good hygiene.

Why is hygiene so important for spa, barber shop and salon owners?

With the rise of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, hygiene has risen to the top of the to-do lists for most barber shop and salon owners. To prevent the spread of the virus, shop owners need to keep their establishments clean and sanitised at all times; they need to prioritize frequent cleaning and disinfection, not just to comply with Covid-19 regulations, but to protect themselves and their employees as well.

Besides the pandemic though, spas and barber shops need to maintain good hygiene standards to prevent the risk of cross contamination of their tools and equipment. Fungi, bacteria and nasty germs of different kinds can easily spread throughout your establishment if you don’t practice good hygiene.

How can you maintain good hygiene in your establishment?

Keep your furniture clean

Most salon chairs are made from PVC or vinyl, making them easy to effectively wipe down and sanitise. You should always take care to use the right cleaning and disinfection products to prevent any accidental damage to your furniture. Avoid using disinfectants that contain alcohol as they react with PVC and vinyl in a negative way, causing your equipment to become brittle and crack.

Avoid cross-contaminating your equipment

It’s absolutely essential that you clean your equipment as thoroughly as possible in between usage – don’t be lazy with this one, it could mean the difference between retaining your clients and shutting down your business. Every piece of equipment that comes into contact with your clients like combs, brushes, clippers and rollers should be cleaned thoroughly after each use and stored in a clean and dry area when not in use.

Don’t forget about personal hygiene

Last but certainly not least, you need to keep yourself and your staff as clean as you keep your equipment. Personal hygiene is almost a prerequisite for people working in spas, salons and barber shops, nobody would trust someone who isn’t clean and neat to take care of their beauty needs. Personal hygiene also helps curb the spread of nasty bacteria and viruses – don’t say we didn’t warn you!

If you’d like to learn more about the things you can do to keep your establishment and equipment clean, don’t be too shy to get in touch with us, we look forward to hearing from you!

3 myths and truths about Skin Care Products

Myths and truths every spa professional should know

As a professional working in any kind of spa, it goes without saying that you should have more knowledge than the average person regarding skin care products. Many of these products have become the subject of controversy in the last few years because of several reasons, including false marketing, false information, and negative side effects, among many others.

There are many myths going around about skin care products that you’ve most likely heard a few times yourself. Today, we’re going to take a look at three of those myths and give you as much truth about them as we can to help you better understand the products you use on your customers.

Myth #1: Our products are free of preservatives

Many companies claim that their skin care products are 100% natural and free of any harmful preservatives, and to great effect too. In many cases, these claims are outright lies fabricated to convince you into buying their products – let’s take a look at the truth behind this myth.

The truth:

Most skin products are water-based, keep that in mind. It’s impossible to create a water-based skin care product that has a long shelf life; because of their makeup, these skin products (like gel and lotion) are vulnerable to moulds, yeast and bacteria build-up over a short period of time. If the skin products you’re shopping for contain water in their formula and claim to be preservative-free, you may want to take another look at the ingredients before using them.

There are a few exceptions of course, namely in skin care products that aren’t water-based such as oil and bath salt; we have both of these items in our catalogue, ready and waiting to make your skin to-die-for. Check them out!

Myth #2: All vitamins and antioxidants used in skin care products provide benefits to the skin

This one is used often to hype skin care products, regardless of their true quality and health benefits. Let’s debunk it!

The truth:

In some cases, skin care companies that make products claiming to have health benefits because of their vitamin and antioxidant properties make these claims to hype their products. The truth is that many of these skin care products contain synthetic vitamins as opposed to natural ones; synthetic vitamins don’t provide the health benefits natural vitamins contain, thus making false the claims that many of these companies make.

Myth #3: All Seaweed, Mud, and Clay-based products are beneficial for detoxification

This one isn’t as much a farce as the other two myths we’ve covered, but it does still have some fallacy to it, let’s take a look.

The truth:

While seaweeds, muds and clays are beneficial for your skin, the extent to which they provide you with the healthy goodness your skin needs are dependent on a few factors, such as:

  1. The source and quality of the raw product;
  2. How these nutritional ingredients are extracted.

For example, some companies dry/dehydrate their seaweed by using processes that involve high temperatures and pressures. This causes the plants to lose most (if not, all of their nutritional value. When it comes to mud and clay-based products, many of these skin care products don’t contain particles that are small enough to penetrate the inner layers of your skin for true and effective detoxification; the particles are mostly only good for basic exfoliation and removing impurities on the surface layer of your skin.

The bottom line?

When all is said and done, it’s on your onus to make sure the products you’re referred to actually contain what their packaging claims them to contain. You should never hesitate to do your due diligence when researching the products that you think are best for your skin – this is your health we’re talking about, so there’s no reason to make any compromises.
